• Mathilde Bernard holds a PhD in French language and literature from Paris III – Sorbonne Nouvelle, obtained in 2008. She is a maître de conférences (associate professor) at the University of Paris Nanterre, specializing in 16th-century French literature.

Bernard’s research focuses primarily on historical writing and historiographical discourse during the French Wars of Religion. Her Phd thesis is titled “Writing Fear in Times of Civil War: A Study of Historians and Memoirists Contemporary with the French Wars of Religion (1562–1598)”. She explores the tensions between truth, dissent, and propaganda in historical narratives, with particular attention to both Protestant and Catholic perspectives. Her work examines how fear, emotion, and polemical strategies shape collective memory, and she has analyzed forms of political and religious satire, practices of controversy, and intellectual and confessional quarrels of the period.
